Sustainable Tree Crops Policy for Inclusive Development in Liberia

Status: Pending Commencement

Funded by: UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), through the Partnerships for Forests (P4F) programme.

Implementing institution: The Nature Compact Liberia, in partnership with the Liberia Agriculture Commodity Regulatory Authority (LACRA)

Duration: 24 months, from September 1, 2026, to August 2028

Where: Bong, Grand Gedeh, Lofa and Nimba Counties

With the EU Deforestation Regulation reshaping global trade, Liberia’s cocoa, coffee and oil palm sectors must prove their products are traceable, legal and deforestation-free to keep their place in high-value markets.

STRIDE helps Liberia get ready. Implemented by The Nature Compact Liberia with LACRA, the project is building a national sustainable tree crops policy, setting up a National Agricultural Commodity Coordination Platform, strengthening LACRA’s capacity, and developing an investment strategy to attract public and private finance. It also pilots a Coffea liberica value chain, training at least 300 smallholder farmers in sustainable practices, certification and traceability.

Women and youth are at the center of the work. They are prioritized for training, represented on the coordination platform, and tracked through gender-disaggregated indicators so they share fairly in the benefits.

STRIDE will directly reach at least 350 people, with several thousand more benefiting through stronger policies and better coordination.

Partners: LACRA, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry Development Authority, Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, Environmental Protection Agency, Cooperative Development Agency, Liberia Chamber of Commerce, Cocoa and Coffee Exporters Association of Liberia, and farmer organizations.

The project was officially launched on October 20, 2026, at D’Calabash in Monrovia.
