The Liberia Forest Sector Project (LFSP) was a multi-year, US$37.5 million initiative aimed at improving the sustainable management of Liberia's tropical forests and increasing benefit-sharing for local communities. Funded by the Government of Norway and managed by the World Bank, the project actively supported Liberia's REDD+ strategy. The initiative focused on four core components:
- Regulatory & Institutional Strengthening: Reformed and harmonised forest-related legal regimes, positioning national institutions and civil society organisations to better implement climate change and emission-reduction goals.
- Targeted Forest Landscape Management: Enhanced community forest governance and land-use planning. It supported sustainable agriculture and alternative livelihoods for more than 10,200 farmers. Additionally, volunteers
organized savings and loan associations to fund local forest-based businesses.
- Forest Monitoring Information System: Commissioned a national measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) system to accurately track deforestation rates and carbon emissions.
- Project Management & Communication: Managed project communications, stakeholder consultations, and ensured that environmental and social safeguards were upheld.
