15,441 Acres

Nationally Recognized Private Protected Area

Golden Stream Corridor Preserve (GSCP) is the first private protected area Ya’axché acquired. The land was purchased in 1998 when a consortium if community leaders advocated to prevent its exploitation from industrial citrus and shrimp farming. GSCP provides a critical forest link in the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor, connecting the Maya Mountains to the Southern coastal plains. GSCP is an area of cultural importance, providing resources for surrounding indigenous communities to construct traditional homes and practice spirituality. It also protects archaeological sites containing remains of ancient human civilizations and Pleistocene mammals.
