Unless land management strategies in Liberia are overhauled to reduce the gap between forestry and agriculture, it will be impossible to create sustainable forest based enterprises, feed and nourish rural and urban populations without further damaging the environment and forests. This means initiatives like REDD+, Community Forest and Protected Area Management are highly unlikely to succeed if people are hungry, poor and land tenure issues are not clarified.
In the next few weeks, we will be challenging the forestry and agriculture sectors on the realities of existing strategies, our challenges, our successes, and how do we progress to achieve the PAPD objectives.
We might step on a few toes, including mine. But someone has to do it.
