PROBIO - Protecting biodiversity through law enforcement and community-led initiatives

11 January 2024

Happy to announce that The Nature Compact joins a consortium of partners to implement a new EU-funded project with the title: "PROBIO - Protecting biodiversity through law enforcement and community-led initiatives" started on 1st January 2024 and will run until March 2026.

The focus of the project is on the support for:

1. The Wildlife Crime Task Force and selected check points (logistics, operations, capacity building),

2. The FDA Auxiliary and Community Eco-guard Programs,

3. The development and promotion of an environmental and conservation curriculum also in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the work with nature/environmental clubs in schools,

4. Human-Wildlife-Conflict mitigation with local farmers (following up on work done by ELRECO),

5. Market awareness and another community volunteer program with female bushmeat seller and in collaboration with the Liberia Marketing Association,

6. General awareness and capacity building for journalists, and

7. Further support for Libassa Wildlife Sanctuary and the confiscated baby elephant taken care of by ELRECO and FDA, and that should be reintroduced into the wild.

8. Development and running of tailor-made short-term conservation courses for journalists and community eco-guards.

The FDA and EPA will be our key government partners. #WCF is the project leader, and SCNL, RSPB, the Nature Compact and Libassa Wildlife Sanctuary are direct project partners, while #ELRECO is a collaborating partner.

The proposed and established protected areas targeted in the project are Lake Piso, Gola, Foya, Grebo-Krahn, Krahn-Bassa and Cestos-Senkwehn.
